When the Calls Start Dropping, Nobody Wants to Own It
Lazer IT Consultants provides business VoIP phone systems, setup, and fully managed support for businesses across Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indio, and the greater Coachella Valley.
Here's how it usually goes. Calls start cutting out. You call the phone company and they run a test, tell you everything looks fine on their end, and suggest it's your internet. You call the internet provider, who tests the line, tells you it looks fine on their end, and suggests it's the phone system. Then somebody mentions your firewall.
Three vendors, three clean bills of health, and your customers still can't hear you.
That's the actual problem with buying a phone system from a phone company. Your calls travel across your internet connection, through your firewall, over your switches, and onto your Wi-Fi. The phone vendor only owns one piece of that, so every problem becomes somebody else's.
We own all of it. Same company handles the phones, the firewall, the network, and the ISP relationship. When something's wrong, there's nobody to point at.

What We Actually Do
| 1 | WE MANAGE THE WHOLE PATH | Phones, firewall, switches, Wi-Fi, and the internet connection underneath all of it. We configure quality-of-service so voice traffic gets priority over somebody streaming a video in the break room, and when there's an issue we deal with the carrier and the ISP directly. You get one number to call and one company responsible. |
| 2 | WE SET IT UP AROUND HOW YOU ANSWER CALLS | Auto attendants, call queues, ring groups, after-hours routing, and voicemail that actually reaches the right person. Most systems are configured once by whoever installed them and never touched again. We build it around how your business really handles a call, then adjust it as you change. |
| 3 | YOUR PHONE FOLLOWS YOU | Desk phone, laptop, or cell — same number, same extension, same voicemail. Staff working from home or on the road answer as though they're at their desk, and nobody has to hand out a personal cell number to a customer. |
| 4 | IT KEEPS WORKING WHEN THE INTERNET DOESN'T | Automatic failover routes calls to mobile devices or a backup connection if your primary internet goes down. A phone system that stops when your ISP has a bad afternoon isn't a phone system — it's a liability with a dial tone. |

What Goes Wrong Without a Plan
| 1 | A MISSED CALL IS A LOST CUSTOMER | People don't leave voicemails anymore. They call the next business on the list. Every dropped call, every ring that goes nowhere after hours, and every menu that dead-ends is revenue that walked out quietly. |
| 2 | THE NETWORK WAS NEVER SET UP FOR VOICE | Voice traffic is unforgiving. A network that handles email and web browsing fine will still produce choppy calls without quality-of-service configured. This is the single most common cause of bad call quality, and phone vendors can't fix it because it isn't theirs to fix. |
| 3 | NOBODY UPDATED THE ROUTING IN FOUR YEARS | The menu still lists a department that closed. Calls route to somebody who left in 2022. The after-hours greeting says you're open until five when you close at four. Small things, and every one of them is a customer's first impression. |
| 4 | E911 WAS NEVER SET UP RIGHT | With traditional lines, emergency services knew your address automatically. With VoIP, that has to be registered and kept current for every location and every remote worker. Most businesses have never checked, and it's the one feature you can't afford to discover is wrong. |
Working With a Local Partner You Can Actually Reach
National VoIP providers are cheap because support is a chat window and a knowledge base article. That's fine right up until your phones go down on a Tuesday morning and you need a human being.
When you call Lazer IT, you get a technician who already knows your network and your call routing. We're a small local team, 20 minutes from your office instead of 2,000 miles away, and we've never outsourced a ticket to a third party in fifteen years of doing this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we keep our existing phone numbers?
Yes. Number porting moves your existing numbers to the new system, and it's routine. It typically takes a couple of weeks with the carriers, so we plan around it and keep your old service running until the port completes. You won't lose calls during the transition.
What happens to our phones if the internet goes down?
Calls automatically fail over to mobile devices or a backup internet connection, depending on how we set it up. Your customers keep reaching you either way. This is one of the first things we configure, and it's one of the most common things we find missing on systems somebody else installed.
Do we have to buy all new phones?
Not always. Many existing IP phones can be reconfigured for a new system, and some businesses skip desk phones entirely and use softphone apps on computers and cell phones. We'll look at what you have and tell you honestly what's worth keeping.
Why does our current VoIP have bad call quality?
Almost always the network rather than the phone system. Voice traffic needs priority over everything else on your connection, which means quality-of-service has to be configured on your firewall and switches. If a phone vendor installed your system without touching your network, that step was probably skipped. It's fixable, and it's usually a configuration change rather than new hardware.
Is VoIP cheaper than traditional phone lines?
Usually, and often significantly — especially if you're still paying for analog lines, long distance, or a maintenance contract on an old phone system. But the honest answer depends on how many lines you have now and what you're paying. We'll compare your current bill against what a new system would cost before you commit to anything.
Can staff work from home with the same phone number?
Yes. Same number, same extension, same voicemail, from a laptop or a cell phone. Calls transfer between people working in different places exactly as if everyone were in the office, and nobody has to give a customer their personal cell number.
What is E911 and why does it matter for VoIP?
With traditional phone lines, emergency services automatically knew the address. VoIP calls can originate anywhere, so your physical address has to be registered with the provider and kept current — for every location and every remote worker. It's a legal requirement and it's frequently set up wrong or never updated after a move. We verify it as part of every install.
Do you support call recording for compliance?
Yes. Call recording with retention configured to your requirements, which matters for financial services, healthcare, and any business that needs a record of what was said. We'll set the retention period and access controls to match what your industry expects.
Do you sell the phone system or manage it?
Both, and the second part is the difference. Plenty of companies will sell you a VoIP system and hand you a support number. We configure it, manage the network it runs on, deal with the carrier when something goes wrong, and adjust your call routing whenever your business changes. When your calls drop, you call us and we own it.
What areas do you serve?
We serve businesses in Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Thousand Palms, Desert Hot Springs, Blythe, and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Our office is at 73280 Hwy 111 Ste 102, Palm Desert.
Are we locked into a long-term contract?
No. Month-to-month agreements are available alongside longer terms, and every new client gets a 90-day risk-free guarantee with no contract buyout.
