How many cameras do we need?
Fewer than most quotes suggest, usually. It depends on what you're actually trying to see — entrances, cash handling, inventory, parking, liability exposure. We walk the building and tell you where coverage genuinely matters and where a camera would just be something else to maintain.
How long is footage kept?
However long you need, within the storage you're willing to pay for. Thirty days is common. Some businesses need ninety for insurance or compliance reasons. The mistake we see constantly is leaving retention at the factory default, which is often just a few days — and nobody discovers that until they go looking for something.
Can we view it from our phones?
Yes, and it should work without a support call. We set up remote viewing, test it on your actual phone before we leave, and show you how to pull and export a clip — because the day you need footage, you don't want to be learning the software.
What brand do you install?
It depends on your building, your budget, and your obligations. We spec business-grade equipment we can support long-term and the exact make and model goes in your quote. If your organization has federal contract or grant exposure, certain manufacturers are restricted and we account for that before ordering anything.
Can you take over a system somebody else installed?
Usually, yes. The common situation is an installer who set everything up under their own account and stopped answering the phone. We'll assess what you have, get you administrative control of your own system, document it, and tell you honestly whether it's worth keeping or replacing.
Do cameras create a security risk?
They can, and it's underappreciated. Internet-connected cameras running default passwords and outdated firmware are a well-documented way into small business networks. We put them on an isolated segment so a compromised camera can't reach anything else, change the credentials, and keep the firmware current.
Can cameras work with door access control?
Yes, and it's worth doing. Tying footage to badge events means you can see who opened a door and what happened immediately after, instead of scrubbing through hours of video hoping to find it.
Are there rules about recording employees or customers?
There are, and they vary. California has specific rules about audio recording in particular, and about recording in areas where people expect privacy. We'll tell you what we know and where you should check with your attorney — we're not lawyers, and signage and consent requirements are worth getting right.
